Gravhounds launches into Early Access tomorrow, Nov 2, on Steam and on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC through Xbox Game Preview, and it arrives day one on Xbox Game Pass. If you have been waiting since the October demo, the wait is basically over, but there are a few things worth knowing before you clock in for your first shift.

What Gravhounds is

Gravhounds is a 1 to 4 player co-op action builder from independent studio Octopus Panic. You play as a pack of bio-engineered dogs, the Gravhounds, sent to hostile alien planets to gather resources, build and defend a base, and extract with everything you can carry before the alien swarms overwhelm you.

The hook is risk versus reward. The longer you stay on a planet, the greater the danger, and the greater the rewards. Runs are built around physics-driven mayhem, with the Grav Beam at the center of the work: it moves heavy resources, positions building kits, and flings objects across the battlefield. Before each expedition, the Mod Deck Builder lets you shape your loadout, with 10 common modifications and up to two more powerful Showstoppers to choose from.

It plays solo or in online co-op with up to three other players, and a crew can split up to cover more ground or stick together as the pressure rises.

Launch details

The Nov 2 date is confirmed in Xbox Wire’s Next Week on Xbox post for Nov 2 to 6, which lists Gravhounds as a Game Preview release, and in Octopus Panic’s own announcements. It launches on Steam Early Access for PC, and as a Game Preview title on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC.

Game Pass subscribers get it day one. Insider Gaming lists it for Ultimate and PC Game Pass, and Octopus Panic confirmed day one Game Pass availability when the game was revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live. Xbox Play Anywhere support means a purchase on one platform covers both Xbox and Windows PC, with shared saves.

One caveat matters: Game Preview means the game is still in development and will change during Early Access. Octopus Panic plans to add more Gravhounds, jobs, worlds, enemies, weapons, and progression systems over the course of Early Access, and says on its Steam page that it expects Early Access to last roughly six months, potentially longer. The studio also says the price will rise as the game grows toward 1.0, with any change announced in advance. This is a work in progress, not a finished 1.0 release, so expect rough edges and balance shifts.

No PlayStation or Switch version has been announced.

What to know before you play

If you played the demo, start fresh. The Steam demo ran Oct 12 to 18, covered 2 solar systems and 7 planets, and featured four playable Gravhounds: Selene, Zane, Dozer, and Finn. Octopus Panic has said demo progress does not carry over into the Early Access release, though feedback from demo sessions shaped the launch build.

That demo followed a September open playtest that drew more than 20,000 testers, according to the studio’s own Steam post, and the demo’s Mod Deck Builder was itself built from playtest feedback. If you skipped the demo, the core loop is the same: drop in, gather, build, defend, and decide when to extract.

The studio behind it

Octopus Panic is a Seattle independent team founded by veterans of 343 Industries and DICE, led by Josh Holmes, the former Halo 4 creative director and former head of Halo Studios. Gravhounds is the studio’s debut, and its reveal trailer set the tone: corporate “perfect workers” in orange exosuits, loyal dogs bred to serve, fighting through candy-colored alien meadows against swarms of blue and pink bugs.

Bottom line

For Game Pass subscribers, Gravhounds is a no extra cost try on Nov 2, and for Steam players it is the start of an Early Access run that the studio plans to grow. The demo showed a co-op loop with a clear identity, and tomorrow is when that loop has to hold up over full expeditions. Game Beacon will keep an eye on how the launch lands and what Octopus Panic adds first.
