Death Stranding is getting a hand-drawn anime series, and it now has a first teaser trailer and a streaming home. Kojima Productions revealed Death Stranding Isolations on Oct 30, confirming the series will stream exclusively on Disney+ and other Disney services in 2027.
The announcement came with a blunt tagline for the new key visual: “My mom became a crater.” It is a fitting first line for a series built on isolation, connection, and the cost of both.
What Death Stranding Isolations is
Isolations is an original story set in the world of Death Stranding, not a retelling of either game. Gematsu reports the series will follow a young man and woman as they set out on an adventure, with its own ensemble of characters rather than Sam Porter Bridges and his allies at the center.
The story is set in North America immediately after Sam, the protagonist of the games, reconnects the continent through the Chiral Network. Kojima Productions says that as America is reborn from the ashes, the renewed connections binding it together bring new and unforeseen consequences.
That premise is where the series gets its name and its tension. In the wake of the Death Stranding, many people were forced to live in absolute isolation, and one of them is a young girl who grows to prefer solitude, turning away from real human connection and letting fate string her along. Chance encounters, Kojima Productions says, launch her headfirst into a world she does not recognize. Around her are a wise old man who connects people through a method that defies all reckoning, a female soldier caught in a cycle of war and destruction, and a boy who seethes at the absurdity of his life.
Who is making it
The series is directed by Takayuki Sano and animated by E&H production, the studio behind Ninja Kamui and Bullet/Bullet, in a traditional hand-drawn 2D style. Tow Ubukata handles series composition and screenplay, Ilya Kuvshinov provides the original character designs, and Hideo Kojima serves as executive producer, with Kojima Productions producing.
Sano said he approached the production with an exceptionally strong sense of duty and responsibility, noting that Kojima’s works have always enhanced the spirituality of those who consume them, and that he needed to accomplish the same thing.
The series was first announced in 2025. The Oct 30 reveal is its first teaser trailer and its first round of concrete story and staff details, which is why this is the moment it moves from a logo on a slate to a show fans can actually picture.
A second Death Stranding project, for a smaller audience
Kojima Productions also announced Death Stranding ODRADEK: Tokyo Prototype on Oct 30, a location-based augmented reality experience developed in partnership with Niantic Spatial. It is available to attendees of the Kojima Productions 10th Anniversary Exhibition, so most fans will not be able to try it directly. Its value is as a signpost: Kojima Productions is still finding new formats for this world beyond console games, and an AR experiment at its own anniversary show is a low risk way to test one.
What is not announced yet
No exact premiere date, episode count, or voice cast has been announced yet. Disney+ is the confirmed home, with other Disney services also named in the announcement, but 2027 is the only window so far. That leaves plenty of room for a fuller trailer and casting news before launch, and fans should treat any date more specific than 2027 as unconfirmed until Kojima Productions says otherwise.
Why this one matters
Death Stranding has always been about connection as both a mechanic and a theme, and an anime set right after the continent is reconnected is a sharp place to test that idea from the other side. Sam’s story was about building the network. Isolations looks like it will ask what happens to the people who do not want to be on it, and what connection costs once it is no longer optional.
For players, it is also a new entry point. You do not need to have finished either game to follow a standalone story with new characters, though knowing what the Chiral Network is will make the setup land harder. For anime fans, it is a rare case of a major game studio handing its world to a hand-drawn production team and letting the series stand on its own story.
Watch for a premiere date and casting announcements next. Until then, the teaser and the 2027 window are the confirmed facts, and they are enough: Death Stranding is officially expanding beyond games, and its next chapter is animated.
