Digital Extremes is opening Soulframe to everyone on PC. Starting Friday, Nov 6, the fantasy action RPG drops its invitation requirement, so any Windows PC player can join the ongoing alpha playtest through Open Preludes. No key is needed, and no Founder’s Pack purchase is required to get in.

The change was announced during Soulframe Devstream 18 on Oct 30, alongside a press release from the studio. It is a major step for a game that has spent years behind a signup wall, with access handed out in waves since its first Preludes builds.

What Open Preludes is, and what it is not

Open Preludes is not a full launch, and it is not a Steam release. Players sign up for an account on the official Soulframe website and download the game’s own PC launcher. The Steam page remains a wishlist page for a wider PC release later, with no date announced for that step. There is also no console version in this phase, and Digital Extremes has not announced a full release date.

What new players will find is an alpha with real content already in place. Sixteen Preludes chapters cover the world, its characters, and how the game plays. Story quests, called Fables, sit alongside open world exploration in Alca, crafting, weapon progression, and cooperative play. The paid Founders program stays in place for players who want to support development, but buying in is no longer the only way through the door.

How to get in on Nov 6

The steps are simple. Create an account on the official Soulframe website, download the PC launcher, and install the game. Players who already have an account can use it, and signups are open now ahead of Nov 6.

Verse of the Veilands changes the world itself

Open Preludes arrives just before Preludes 17, titled Verse of the Veilands, which is expected later in November with no exact date announced. This is the update that reworks how players move through the world, and it starts with a darker picture.

In Verse of the Veilands, regions of Midrath are corrupted by Ode forces. Siphons drain energy from the land, leaving areas harsher, with displaced wildlife, fewer resources, and activities that stay locked until the land is restored. After the Torment Stag encounter, players begin reclaiming regions: complete Votives, the game’s missions, work with local enclave representatives, learn a region’s sacred song, and cleanse its siphon.

Restoration is not just visual. MMORPG.com reports that healed regions bring back wildlife and activities such as fishing, while offering different loot and resources. The Votive system is also reworked so missions can be accepted from the world map after meeting the right enclave representative, which should make progression easier to follow than it has been in earlier builds.

Creative director Geoff Crookes has acknowledged the team was nervous about making the world look harsher at first, since Soulframe’s peaceful, beautiful environments are one of its most praised qualities. The idea, he explained, is to make the player’s role as a healer something you can see and feel in the world, not just in the story.

Wolf mounts, at last

The headline feature for many players is simpler: wolf mounts. Players who raised a wolf pup in Preludes 16 can finally grow that companion into a rideable Omen Wolf in Preludes 17. The steps, as Digital Extremes laid them out, are to complete the pup’s training, purify two Veilands regions, brew a Bairnday Biscuit, and feed it to the pup. Growing the pup is a choice, not an automatic change, and the grown wolves keep much of their playful puppy personality, according to the studio.

Preludes 17 also adds a new Pact, Ode Shrike, a hunter inspired by the invading Ode forces. It focuses on traps and deception, with spike traps, balloon darts that lift enemies, bola chains that link enemies together, and an evasive throwing bomb. New weapons and armor, enemy variants, fish, and cave generation updates are also planned, along with returning seasonal content.

One open question: co-op matchmaking

Soulframe is designed around cooperative play, and that is the area where Digital Extremes is most careful with its promises. Lead designer Scott McGregor and Crookes told Wccftech that matchmaking improvements, including matchmaking for dungeons and Votives, are a near term focus. But they stopped short of guaranteeing that dungeon and Votive matchmaking will arrive in Preludes 17. It could land in that update or a later one.

For players jumping in on Nov 6, that means grouping up may still take some organizing at first.

What it means for players

If you have been curious about Soulframe but did not want to chase an invite, Nov 6 is your first clean entry point. Go in expecting an alpha, not a finished game: systems are still changing, the world is about to get a major rework, and some co-op conveniences are still on the way. Sign up now, download the launcher on Nov 6, and start with the Fables and the Torment Stag path. That route leads into the Veilands system, and from there into the wolf mount steps that make Preludes 17 feel like a real payoff.
