The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Nintendo Switch 2 is officially out today, October 29, but a lot of fans who did everything right will not be unboxing one. Walmart canceled a wave of pre-orders for the $519.99 console a day before launch, and the system is sold out on Nintendo’s own store. Here is what happened and what you can still do.

What Walmart did

Starting Wednesday, Walmart customers who pre-ordered the Zelda Switch 2 received emails saying their order was canceled because the item was out of stock, according to reports from Kotaku and Nintendo Life. Buyers who contacted support say they were told Walmart oversold the console. Affected customers are not being charged, and some report being offered $10 in store credit. At the same time, third party listings on Walmart.com showed the console for around $700. Walmart has not made a public statement.

What is in the box

Per Nintendo’s store listing, the bundle is hardware only. No game is included.

  • Nintendo Switch 2 with Zelda inspired patterns on the back
  • Green and gold Joy-Con 2 controllers, grip and two straps
  • Black and gold dock with a Triforce on the front
  • AC adapter, USB-C cable and Ultra High Speed HDMI cable

Matching accessories also launch today: a Zelda Switch 2 Pro Controller at $99.99, a Nintendo Store exclusive version with a display stand at $109.99, and a carrying case with screen protector at $39.99.

Where you can still get one

  • Nintendo Store: the listing reads “More inventory is on the way.” Add it to your Wish List in the Nintendo Store app to get a restock alert.
  • Nintendo NEW YORK and SAN FRANCISCO: today’s sales need a Warp Pipe Pass reservation, one console per customer.
  • Launch day restocks: no major retailer had confirmed stock as of early Thursday, per Tom’s Guide, which notes US drops usually land mid morning.
  • Best Buy: some stores plan to sell consoles at the Ocarina of Time remake’s midnight launch on November 5.

Nintendo has also said more is coming. Nintendo’s Latin America vice president Bill van Zyll admitted the company “underestimated” demand and is “working on replenishments,” as Game Rant reported.

Our take

Walmart has been here before: it also canceled some original Switch 2 pre-orders around the June 2025 launch. If your order was canceled, do not pay a reseller $700. Nintendo is openly promising more stock, and the console’s whole point, Ocarina of Time, does not arrive until November 5 anyway. Set the Wish List alert, watch the morning restock windows, and keep your $180.

Did Walmart cancel your Zelda Switch 2, or did yours ship?
