Quick answer: Frostpunk 2: The Surge is the third and final paid expansion for Frostpunk 2. It launches on December 14, 2026, on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG and Microsoft Store), PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It adds a new story campaign in a frozen valley, storm-harvesting technology that turns whiteouts into a stored resource, and caves and ruins to explore. Deluxe Edition owners get it at no extra cost. Current as of November 3, 2026.
11 bit studios has revealed the last big chapter of Frostpunk 2. The Surge arrives on December 14 with a release date trailer, and the studio says it is the third and final paid expansion for the city survival game that won Best Sim/Strategy at The Game Awards 2024.
The storm becomes your power source
In every Frostpunk game so far, the whiteout has been the enemy. The Surge flips that. According to the official Steam page, you can deploy specialised storm-driven technology to convert catastrophic whiteouts into harvested and stored resources. 11 bit describes it as a revolutionary new power that pushes city automation to levels the base game never reached.
There is a catch. The expansion adds two new factions, and they disagree about how this new resource should be used. One side wants a new kind of city that can conquer the frost. The other wants to keep moving south toward warmth. As usual in Frostpunk 2, the Council politics may be harder to manage than the cold.
A new campaign in a mysterious valley
The Surge is a story-driven scenario with branching choices. After a journey through the frozen remains of the United States, your people reach a remote valley, following rumours of a marvel left behind by “history’s greatest mind” that could reshape the world. You can venture into caves and ruins, uncover hidden treasures and dig into the valley’s mysteries.

Our take
Turning the series’ signature killer into fuel is the most interesting idea Frostpunk 2 has had since launch, and it fits the game’s best trick: every solution creates a new political problem. If you own the Deluxe Edition, there is nothing to do but wait for December 14. If you bought the base game only, add The Surge to your Steam wishlist so you see the price the moment it goes live.
The Surge follows Fractured Utopias and Breach of Trust, and 11 bit has said Frostpunk 1886, a rebuilt version of the original game, is still planned for 2027.
